Account manager in Mechelen
You understand what the client means. Even when they’re still figuring it out themselves.
“Could you take a look at this?” Seven words. Sometimes there’s a small design tweak behind them. Sometimes a full-blown positioning question. You enjoy figuring out the difference. Preferably before the quote.
Umbau is looking for an account manager with marketing insight. Someone who listens well, asks sharp questions and turns loose requests into a workable plan. Someone who gives clients confidence, colleagues direction and projects momentum.

Umbau, you say?
Umbau is a communications agency in Mechelen, Belgium. We help businesses and public authorities make complex stories clear to the people they want to reach. With strategy, content, campaigns and extra expertise where needed.
Our name literally means ‘rebuild’. We strengthen what’s already there, question what’s stuck and make it work better. Simplify complexity. Half down-to-earth, half stubborn: that combination turns out to work. And it almost always starts with the right questions. That’s where you come in.
What you’ll actually do
You’re the go-to contact for your clients and keep their goal in sight. You understand what’s going on in their organisation, bring the right colleagues together and make sure everyone knows what needs to happen. After the meeting too. Yes, that includes status updates, schedules and quite a few emails. Someone has to remember what exactly we agreed last Tuesday.
- You clarify the question. You talk to clients about their audiences, ambitions and commercial or societal challenges. You keep asking until it’s clear which problem we actually need to solve.
- You translate conversations into sharp briefings, realistic schedules and clear responsibilities. From “we want to do something with this” to something a team can actually get to work on.
- You keep the work on track. You keep an eye on budget, timing, scope and quality. When you hear “just one small addition”, you calmly check how small it really is.
- You gather feedback, set priorities and dare to advise against something if it doesn’t move the client forward. Even if everyone has already had three meetings about it.
- You discuss results with clients and colleagues and see where a next step makes sense. Not because we’re out to sell more, but because good work usually uncovers new questions.
- You understand marketing. You know how strategy, creative, content and digital marketing work together to drive results. You don’t have to be able to do everything yourself. But you do need to know when to bring which specialist to the table. And sometimes you roll up your sleeves yourself. We’re a compact team. Hands-on work comes with the territory. We call that welcome variety.
- You spot opportunities and act on them. You bring a network and are keen to tap into it and keep growing it. You find it easy to approach people, enjoy a chat and are genuinely curious about what keeps them busy.
Umbau has ambition. So you also get room to help build our growth. At an event, during a networking moment or over that coffee that has been “definitely getting scheduled” for three months. Before your palms start sweating: days of cold calling are not what we have in mind. Being curious is. Daring to approach people. Recognising an interesting question. And making sure a good conversation doesn’t end with “we should definitely do something together sometime”.
What you bring
- You have experience in account management, marketing consultancy or project management on the agency or client side. As a mid-level professional, you’ve already guided clients and projects independently.
- You’re sincerely interested in people. And not afraid of a tough question.
- You turn a conversation into a clear briefing and an agreement into a concrete next step.
- You understand enough about marketing, content and digital channels to contribute on substance and bring in the right colleague at the right moment.
- You communicate with ease. Also when you’re discussing feedback, adjusting expectations or defending a proposal. In Dutch, that goes without saying. Bonus points if you can do the same in French and get further than “Bonjour, ça va?”
- You take responsibility. And you speak up in time when something threatens to get stuck. In our experience, problems rarely disappear on their own if you ignore them long enough.
Experience with workshops, presentations and pitches? That’s a nice bonus.
And what we offer in return
A place close to the client, the strategy and the work. You work on meaty challenges for a wide range of clients, together with experienced colleagues. In a compact agency, your insight counts: in client projects, in our own growth and in how we organise our work.
We’re not going to try to win you over with a ping-pong table, a fruit basket or the promise that we’re “one big family”. What you do get: a fair salary in line with your experience, a company car, meal vouchers, a laptop, hospitalisation insurance, a mobile phone subscription and the right tools to do your job well. You work from Mechelen, with room for hybrid working and common sense in planning. And coffee. Or Nalu.
Ready for your first briefing?
Luckily, it’s a simple one. Send us your CV and tell us briefly what experience you bring and why it’s relevant to the clients Umbau works for. That tells us more than a cover letter in which you call yourself “a real people person” for the third time.
Email your CV to bernard.deruyver@umbau.be and we’ll meet soon.
